Josiah and I am from Suffolk, VA.
What did you know about CrossFit before coming here?
I didn’t know much about CrossFit but I had come across some articles about how it was cult and how the people participating in it were putting themselves in danger. It definitely kept me away from CrossFit for a few years.
How did you find out about CrossFit and why did you start?
I found out about CrossFit from my twin brother. He had a lot of success with it at the university he was attending in Tennessee.
I started because I had been doing personal training for about 6 months and built a good foundation on exercise and routines but I couldn’t help but feel like there was something else out there. I did some research about CrossFit and sent a couple emails to some local boxes. I was about to join a box in Chesapeake and realized Pivot Point was 5 miles from where I lived. I dropped in for a class the next day and was instantly hooked.
How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness?
CrossFit has opened up a door of possibilities. In the past I’d try to run a mile or workout at a gym and I’d do well in the beginning but five minutes later I’d find some excuse to give up.
CrossFit has thrown those excuses out the window. The physical toll it takes to push through a WOD is demanding, but the voice inside your head telling you to “slow down” or “stop and rest” or “give up” is almost debilitating.
Through CrossFit I learned to push through that mental barrier and to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Now I’m doing things I thought I could never do, like rope climbs and hand stand push ups. It makes me wonder, “What else can I do?!”

What is your favorite movement?
I love Squats!!
Is there a workout or movement you would like to see more of?
Rope climbs! If there are rope climbs in the WOD in the next few weeks, sorry (but not really)!
What are your goals for this year, and have you accomplished any goals already?
My main goal was a physical transformation of about 30-40 lbs lost. I think some journeys of transformation have to start from the inside out. A lot of people who are overweight make the mistake of saying “I’m not happy with myself because I put on weight,” but most of the time people put on weight because they aren’t happy with themselves. My mental and emotional baggage manifested itself physically.
As I’ve learned to face my demons, drop my baggage and use CrossFit as an outlet, I’ve become someone else. I’m happier, more kind and more positive. I feel fully alive. I guess that in itself is an accomplishment. I’m sure the rest will follow.
Describe your biggest milestone, achievement or “A-ha” moment?
I consider finishing every WOD an achievement! We get so caught up in trying to finish first or trying to beat the clock that we forget to celebrate the fact that we just beat ourselves to the ground and pushed ourselves beyond our limits! It’s important to celebrate the little things.
What do you like most about Pivot Point CrossFit?
The combination of amazing coaches and genuine members makes Pivot Point CrossFit special. The sense of community at Pivot Point CrossFit is nothing short of amazing. From my very first day I was welcome with open arms. When I leave for California at the end of June, it will be hard for me to say goodbye to all the amazing friends I’ve met and have now come to call family.
What encouragement or advice would you give to new people coming in?
Trust the process. Your first day can be a bit overwhelming but give yourself time to learn the movements. CrossFit is inherently a difficult sport, but CrossFit breeds an athlete who learn discipline and grit. Show up, put in the work, eat right and you’ll get where you want to be.
What are some of your hobbies?
I do a lot of reading and take pictures.
