What did you know about CrossFit before coming here?
It consisted of body weight exercises and lifting heavy. I was told by some people that athletes are know to get knee injuries from doing Crossfit.
How did you find out about CrossFit and why did you start?
I attended the YMCA and my personal trainer told me that she had a good friend that was opening up a Crossfit gym in Suffolk and she described the area to me. I decided to come check it out.
How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle and level of fitness?
I learned that Crossfit is not unique to any one type of person, body shape, of physical condition. Crossfit has changed my way of thinking in respect of challenging myself to go beyond my limits. Crossfit allows me to set goals of accomplishing physical movements I only dreamed of.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
I started CrossFit several years ago to help me get ready for an Academy. I had a short amount of time to gain as much strength as possible. It helped me tremendously, but I wasn’t able to continue while I was going through it. After I graduated, life happened and I didn’t take the time to return and actually work on the skills and perfect the movements. I started at Pivot Point in November, 2015. Not as a quick fix, or a short term goal. but to improve my lifestyle and health for longterm.
What is your favorite movement?
I love Dead Lifting. Mainly because it’s one my strongest movements. I feel such a sense of accomplishment when I lift something that weighs so much more than I do!
Is there a workout or movement you would like to see more of?
I am careful what I wish for these days. I really enjoy the variety that Pivot Point has. I love trying new movements and look forward when they come around again. If I had to pick, I like Sally. It’s motivating, fun, and I love watching everyone’s faces haha.
What are your goals for this year, and have you accomplished any goals already?
I have so many things I’d like to accomplish this year! Mainly though, I would like to do a pull up! I use to think it was impossible, I just wasn’t built for it, I was too heavy, or just not strong enough. But I am getting there! Notable accomplishments? – a perfect SQUAT (more on that shortly), 270lb Dead Lift!
Describe your biggest milestone, achievement or “A-ha” moment?
TOTALLY WOULD BE MY SQUAT! Who would have known that such a simple “HA” movement would be so incredibly difficult to master – I mean, 3 year olds do it all the time. Wow. When I walked into crossfit, Charlie and JT asked to see my squat. It was awful. I nearly fell over. They never explained to me just how bad it was, but I knew. My new years resolution was to master the squat, since its pretty much a necessity to move forward! A few weeks later I had checked it off my bucket list. The gains I’ve made in such a short amount of time bring are phenomenal. I am so thankful.
What do you like most about Pivot Point CrossFit?
I love the atmosphere, training and motivation I experience when I walk through the door. You would never know that 6 short months ago, we were all complete strangers. I feel like I have an support system at pivot point, and it pushes me to reach my goals and help my new family meet theirs!
What encouragement or advice would you give to new people coming in?
A wise man told me once, “just show up”. All I had to do was cross through the door and they assured me the rest would follow. I still struggle to find the time to do this and that, there are never enough hours in the day, but if you make time for yourself and your health, the rewards are so great. Never give up on yourself – you are capable of so much more than you think you are. All you have to do it show up and you’ll see!
